Lots To Blog About!

Wow so much has happened in the last month...almost too much!
- Last week we said goodbye to our student teacher Miss Hensel. Below are some pictures of her "Rocking Behavior" Guitar. My students just loved to be referred to as Rockstars.  As a farewell gift we made a Rocking Frame. When a Rockstar deserves a picture taken they can have their picture taken by the paparazzi and hung up on a wall of fame in the classroom. I was even thinking she can use it when special speakers and guests visit her room. I may make an "I'm a Leader" frame to continue with our Leader in Me theme for next year.
OH and we give Miss Hensel a VERY BIG THANK YOU for her gift to our class...a KINDLE! Did you know it can hold up to 4,500 books!!! We are so excited to use it during our day. I have already downloaded some books and will be teaching the class how to use our new classroom gadget this week.

- Another neat activity we did was an extension lesson for the story The Dot. The Dot is a short story in our Reading Street Series that teaches us that anything can be art and anything can be treasured. We took inspiration from the main character and her love for drawing dots to create our own dot paintings. Our class also did a bit of research on the famous painter George Seurat (A French painter who was know for using tiny brushstrokes to create very detailed images) . After creating our dot paintings we had our classmates write a description to match the painting using as many adjectives as they could.

 - We are also beginning our unit on the Rainforest. The past few weeks we have explored a variety of habitats and will now be focusing Writer's Workshop and Science time become experts on the Rainforest. As part of our May Theme Day we had 3 stations set up to help transform our classroom surrounds into this tree covered, viney , wet and interesting habitat. I will post more pictures as we move forward with our unit. Here are a few from our Theme Day last week. Station 1 was all about taste testing tropical foods. We tasted papaya, mango, banana, and chocolate. Station 2 was creating our Safari Guides that will house information as learn more about the Rainforest.  Station 3 was making chain links (to represent vines) and leaves to display in the classroom. Finally station 4 was creating our Rocking picture frame for Miss Hensel. It was a morning full of creative synergy.
